I really enjoy working with my hands, but about 40 years ago, with one semester between me and a degree in teaching high school shop; I changed to an engineering program. I pursued both paths based on the same belief: people are at their best when they can live in a healthy environment, and with reasonable effort, obtain what they need. Initially, I first felt I could teach and help others effect that environment; but shifted to engineering where my contribution would more directly impact that physical world. I am retired from that engineering career. It is time for The Other Path - Custom Woodwork. I am using what I can do with my hands to facilitate giving back to our community.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
There is much need in our community, and each of us sees needs based on our life experiences. The Other Path - Custom Woodwork will facilitate addressing the need you see. This approach is straight forward; I perform the custom woodwork that you request; your payment for that commission goes the charity you specify; the charity serving the need that you see based on your life experience and conscience.
We will identify the woodworking commission function; I will make it; you will pay for it - if and only if you see a final product that is what you envisioned. I guarantee your commission. I will re-do, repair or refund. You will not pay for something that does not work for you.
WHERE?
I am fortunate in so many ways. One of them is my roots. My shop is on a farm where my grandfather arrived as an infant; my Dad was born there. Now, I make wood things there; and look out the shop doors at trees that shaded my ancestors, roses that were planted over 100 years ago, and a spring fed pond that was a water source for millennia of Native Americans. Stop by; we can work on your design. I am not against lubricating the process with a beer.

Karl's Project
Karl and his family need a dining room table. We have collaborated on a design that represents what they like for the space. Soon, the table will be at the center of family activities.
As to the commission fee, Karl lost his mother to ovarian cancer; what they pay for the table will go to The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance.
Marcia's Projects
Marcia is a retired teacher, and master gardener. And, she rescues dogs. Over the years of rescue efforts, the woodwork and table in the kitchen has been customized by canine teeth. Marcia would prefer that the woodwork and table be restored or replaced.
Her current boisterous companion came from the KC Pet Project. That is where the commission payment will be donated.
Jim and Stacey Project
Jim and Stacey come from a small town in Flint Hills range land. They like real furniture, made with real wood. A guest bedroom will get a walnut, queen size headboard.
They have not specified a charity, yet. I look forward to hearing about the cause they wish to support with the commission contribution for this furniture.
Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester
My sister in law, Nancy, is a breast cancer survivor. She received amazing support from the BCCR, and is active in the organization today. Every year, a gala is held to raise funds for this wonderful organization. I like to put a piece of furniture in the silent auction taking place at this gala event.
The Blue Door Project
A group of intrepid, motivated, caring people have taken action. They are launching an investment in our community youth. More specifically, they are providing teenage foster children a safe and supportive environment; and help in reaching their potential.

ASPCA
"We are their voice." The ASPCA was founded on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law.

Burns & McDonnell holds a silent auction for a specified charity every year. This table was made specifically for Carmon, and placed in that auction. Her bid won; Habitat for Humanity was supported.
If someone else had won the bid, I'd have made another for her. As it happened, she needed another, anyway. That contribution went to The Blue Door Project.
